Sorry, you’re stupid!

Here’s what really gets me.

Why is it, that whenever somebody calls you up, and it’s a wrong number for them, they always try to make YOU feel stupid for doing it? I swear, every single time, no matter who’s doing the dialing, no matter who’s doing the receiving, the wrong number dialing person always gets so defensive and tries to turn their mistake around on somebody else.

Every wrong number call goes the same. Here’s one that just happened to me not too long ago:

ME: “Hello?”

FOOL: “Hi, is Charles there?”

ME: “Sorry, you have the wrong number.”

FOOL (pause): “Well, is this (gives my phone number)?”

ME: “Yes, it is, but there is still no Charles here.”

FOOL (another pause): “Okay then, BYE.” (hangs up)

Then they feel like you owe them something, like it’s your responsibility to prove it to them that they are wrong, and you aren’t just lying. What do they think is going on? Do they think that Charles is here, and I’m just lying to them, or refusing to let them speak to him? What could I possibly gain from doing that? I thought about saying “Charles isn’t here… I have killed him” but that certainly wouldn’t go over well.
